3rd November, 2026, Vrindavan: Demonstrating how traditional resources and simple technology can contribute to sustainable living, Jiva Institute in Vrindavan has installed a biogas plant that converts everyday organic waste into clean cooking fuel and nutrient-rich organic manure.
Initiated by Mahant Dr. Satyanārāyaṇa Dāsa Bābājī, the project represents a practical approach to waste management, resource conservation and environmental sustainability. The first test of the installation was conducted on 25 October 2026.
The plant primarily uses cow dung, along with organic kitchen waste such as vegetable scraps and leftover food. Approximately 80 kg of organic material is processed every day. Before being fed into the digester, the material is ground and mixed with water. Inside the sealed tank, microorganisms decompose the organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas through a natural process known as anaerobic digestion.
The gas generated by the plant is supplied directly to the Jiva Institute kitchen. According to the Institute, the installation is now meeting the entire cooking-gas requirement of its kitchen, where meals are prepared daily for residents and guests.
The benefits of the system extend beyond energy generation. The residual slurry produced during the digestion process is a nutrient-rich organic fertiliser, which is being used for plants in the Institute’s garden. Thus, organic waste is not merely disposed of but converted into useful resources that support the natural cycle.
The entire installation has cost approximately ₹5 lakh and has been designed for simple operation without the need for highly specialised technical personnel. The successful performance of the present plant is particularly encouraging, especially as an earlier attempt using a different system had not yielded satisfactory results.

A Model for Sustainable Vrindavan
Vrindavan, with its numerous temples, ashrams, goshālās and community kitchens, generates considerable quantities of organic waste every day. Much of this material has the potential to be converted into useful energy and organic manure rather than being discarded.
The Jiva Institute initiative offers a replicable model for religious institutions, ashrams and other establishments that generate substantial quantities of cow dung and kitchen waste. Decentralised biogas plants can help reduce the burden on municipal waste-management systems, minimise organic waste disposal and provide an alternative source of cooking fuel.
The initiative also reflects the traditional Indian philosophy of living in harmony with nature, where resources are respected, waste is minimised and natural cycles are maintained.
By transforming cow dung and kitchen waste into cooking gas and returning the residual nutrients to the soil, Jiva Institute has demonstrated how a relatively modest investment can deliver meaningful environmental benefits.
From the cow to the kitchen, and from the kitchen to the garden, the initiative beautifully illustrates a circular approach to resource management — turning waste into a valuable resource while moving towards a cleaner and greener Vrindavan.
