2024.08.11 (Vrindavan Today News): The ancient and deteriorating Govind Kund, which has been in a state of disrepair, is set to undergo a significant transformation. The government has approved a budget of ₹176 lakh for the renovation and beautification of the site, with an initial installment of ₹80 lakh already released. The work is expected to commence soon, following the tender process.
The historical Govind Kund, located in the Radha Niwas area, had previously been partially restored by the Braj Foundation, with millions of rupees spent on its refurbishment. However, in the following years, the condition of the Kund deteriorated once again. The stones around the Kund broke, and the area became polluted with sewage from nearby residences. Overgrown with weeds, the site became a haven for alcoholics and gamblers, now resembling a dirty pond rather than a sacred water body.
Recognizing the Kund’s ancient significance, the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad (UPBTVP) had submitted a proposal to the tourism department, requesting ₹175.23 lakh for its restoration and beautification. The proposal was approved, and the government has released the first installment of ₹80 lakh. The renovation work will begin after the construction plans are approved by the Development Authority and relevant local authorities, objections are addressed, and environmental clearances are to be obtained. Once completed, the dilapidated Kund will be restored to its former glory as a clean water reservoir.
According to tradition, Lord Krishna used to bring cows to this spot for grazing, and the Gopas and Gopis constructed the Kund to provide drinking water for the cattle. Some historians also believe that the mound of Goma tila was expanded up to Govind Kund situated in the Gora Nagar Colony (behind the Vrindavan Bus stand). This kund was situated on the bottom of Goma Teela where Lord Govind Dev manifested. It is also believed that this tank was built to facilitate the water to build the red sand stone temple.
This is one of the four major kunds situated in Vrindavan. The other kunds are Davanal Kund, Brahma Kund, Moti jheel.
