Ropeway Malfunction: IIT Roorkee team conducts Inspection

2025.03.25 (Vrindavan Today News): A technical team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee conducted a detailed inspection of the Barsana ropeway on Tuesday. The team examined the control panel and other crucial components, ensuring that the system is in working order. Following their assessment, the team initiated a trial run of the ropeway under their supervision.

A comprehensive report has been compiled and is set to be submitted to the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA) on Wednesday. Upon approval from MVDA officials, the ropeway management is expected to receive the necessary clearance to resume operations. If all goes as planned, the ropeway could be operational by Thursday.

The ropeway, which facilitates access to the revered Shri Radharani Temple, suffered a sudden malfunction on March 19. At the time of the incident, three trolleys carrying devotees back from the temple station unexpectedly collided due to technical issues, causing a disruption in services. The unexpected breakdown has since posed significant difficulties for pilgrims, as they are now required to climb 251 steps to reach the temple.

The inconvenience has been particularly challenging for elderly devotees and those with mobility issues, prompting urgent intervention from authorities. The ropeway’s management, Shri Radharani Ropeway Pvt. Ltd., assured that all necessary steps are being taken to restore operations safely and efficiently.

On Tuesday, a three-member expert team, led by Professor S.P. Harsha from IIT Roorkee, conducted a meticulous technical assessment. The team spent approximately four hours scrutinizing key components, including the control panel, cabins, and loading mechanisms. The evaluation also covered multiple technical parameters to ensure the ropeway meets safety and operational standards.

According to Abhay Raj Awasthi, Director of Shri Radharani Ropeway Pvt. Ltd., the IIT Roorkee team’s findings will be submitted to MVDA officials on Wednesday. If the report satisfies regulatory requirements, the necessary clearance will be issued, allowing the ropeway to resume operations as early as Thursday.

For thousands of devotees visiting Barsana, the ropeway remains a crucial mode of transport, significantly easing their journey to the temple. The recent disruption highlighted the dependence on this facility, emphasizing the need for stringent maintenance protocols and regular technical evaluations.

With the inspection now completed and approvals pending, the prospect of a fully functional ropeway is a welcome relief for devotees, ensuring a smoother and safer pilgrimage experience in the coming days.
