Ban Imposed on Panda Samaj from Conducting Rituals during Ahoi Ashtami Snan

2025.10.11 (Vrindavan Today News): In a significant administrative move, the district authorities of Mathura have prohibited the Panda Samaj (local priest community) from conducting Ahoi Ashtami puja at Radha Kund between 13th October evening to 14th October morning 3 am. The decision comes ahead of the festival, which will be observed on October 13, and aims to maintain public order, safety, and cleanliness during the large gatherings traditionally associated with the event.

The order was issued following an inspection of local arrangements by District Magistrate (DM) Chand Prakash Singh and Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar. Both officials personally reviewed the preparations at Radhakund and later convened a coordination meeting with senior officers to ensure smooth management.

DM Chandra Prakash Singh directed officials to take strict measures to regulate the crowd and to ensure barricading, sanitation, and adequate lighting at the ghats of Shri Radha Kund and Krishna Kund. He emphasized that no unauthorized person or group, including the Tirtha Purohits, will be permitted to perform or organize ritual activities at the ghats in the stipulated time of the midnight bath. “Our foremost priority is the safety and convenience of the devotees. The entire administration will remain on high alert throughout the festival.” said Chandra Prakash Singh.

SSP Shlok Kumar reiterated the same stance, highlighting the need for strict crowd control and vigilance. “Police personnel have been instructed to monitor all ghats closely and prevent any form of disturbance or mismanagement, said Sholk Kumar, the Senior Superintendent of Police.

Traditionally, Ahoi Ashtami draws large numbers of devotees to Radhakund in Braj. The midnight bathing ritual in Radha Kund is central to the celebrations in Vrindavan and is considered highly auspicious, especially for couples hoping for children.

Ahoi Ashtami or Bahulashtami, falling on the eight day of the dark fortnight of the month of Kartik, marks the appearance of Radha and Krishna Kunds. The Puranas state that on the midnight of the ashtami tithi of Kartik Masa, Shri Radha dug the earth with her bangle to manifest Radhakund, while Shri Krishna used His flute to reveal the latter.

Barricades are being set up around ghats, with dedicated entry and exit points to ensure the orderly movement of devotees. Cleanliness drives and lighting installations are also underway to create a safe and spiritual atmosphere during the worship hours.

The decision to bar the Panda Samaj has drawn mixed responses. While some see it as a deviation from tradition, officials maintain that the step was necessary in view of public safety and administrative discipline.

With heightened security arrangements, clear administrative supervision, and visible civic management, the district authorities hope to ensure that Ahoi Ashtami 2025 is observed in an atmosphere of devotion, peace, and safety for all participants.
