The Divine Glory of Vrindavan’s dust
2025.01.14 (Vrindavan Today News): Once, during the auspicious occasion of the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, multitudes from across the land were preparing to journey to the sacred confluence for holy dips, charity, and penance. In Vrindavan, Shri Nanda Maharaj and his companions deliberated on joining the pilgrimage, eager to partake in the spiritual festivities. However, young Krishna, ever mischievous yet divine, had other plans. One serene morning, as Shri Nanda Baba sat outside his assembly with the elder cowherds, a sudden commotion broke the tranquil atmosphere. A fearsome black horse came galloping furiously toward them, its presence evoking fear among the simple-hearted villagers. Whispered speculations of an emissary from Kansa spread quickly. Yet, to everyone’s astonishment, the horse veered into a patch of soft, golden dust near the village outskirts and began rolling ecstatically.
Before their very eyes, the creature underwent a miraculous transformation. Its dark, fearsome form turned fair and radiant, revealing a being of extraordinary beauty and divine aura. Overwhelmed with awe, Nanda Baba inquired, “Who are you, O noble one? How did you come here, and what is the mystery behind your transformation?” The horse, now in the guise of a resplendent celestial being, folded his hands and spoke with reverence. “O King of Vraja, I am Prayagraj, the sacred confluence where millions come to cleanse their sins. The good, the wicked, the pure, and the impure—all immerse themselves in my waters, leaving behind the weight of their transgressions. This burden stains me, turning my form dark. Before every Kumbh, I journey to this hallowed land of Vrindavan to bathe in its divine dust. Only the sacred soil of Vrindavan can purify me and restore my pristine essence. Now cleansed, I bow before you, the residents of this sanctified realm, and take my leave.” With these words, the celestial figure vanished as mysteriously as he had appeared. Krishna, with a mischievous smile playing on His lips, turned to Nanda Baba. “Baba, have you decided on an auspicious day for our journey to Prayagraj?” Nanda Baba and the elders, their hearts brimming with pride and devotion, exclaimed in unison, “Why should we journey to Prayagraj when even Prayagraj comes here to purify himself? What greater sanctity could we seek than what lies beneath our feet in the dust of Vrindavan?” Thus, their plans were abandoned, and they rejoiced in the unparalleled glory of their beloved Vrindavan. The divine dust of this sacred land, where even the holiest seek redemption, remained their ultimate refuge.
