Vrindavan, 2022-03-18 (Vrindavan Today News): Speaking during the zero hour of the parliament MP Hema Malini mooted the proposal of providing stipulated pension for Braj artists. The idea has been applauded by the fraternity and intellectuals who are not only aware but also greatly concerned about the difficulties faced by the artists. In addition to providing financial support to them, government support in the form of regular pension will also go a long way in preserving the artistic heritage of Braj, and that of the nation at large.
In the absence of patrons and/or government support, and as opportunities to showcase their art dwindle day-by-day, artists in Braj are struggling to keep their art and families alive. Pushed to the extreme, they are forced to give up the tradition they have been preserving and practicing in many cases for generations, and take up other means of earning livelihood.This is not just the loss of an individual, but that of the nation’s artistic and cultural heritage.
Addressing the parliament on the issue, Hema Malini said, “As an artist myself, I am aware of the difficulties being faced by the community in Braj. There are several long-standing and systemic issues that are threatening their sustenance. The pandemic has exacerbated the situation. I request the government to extend support in the form of regular pension for Braj artists who are the nation’s valuable assets.”
