Motorable Road to replace old railway path in Vrindavan

2025.02.28 (Vrindavan Today News): The Government of Uttar Pradesh is set to construct a road on the now-defunct Mathura-Vrindavan railway line. This decision comes following the intervention of Member of Parliament Smt. Hema Malini, who sought approval from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The railway minister has now agreed to hand over the land to the state government, facilitating the construction of a crucial roadway that is expected to ease congestion and improve connectivity for both locals and the millions of pilgrims visiting the region annually.

The Mathura-Vrindavan railway line, originally a 12-kilometer-long meter-gauge track, was in the process of being upgraded to a broad-gauge line. This initiative, led by Hema Malini, was envisioned to introduce train services every 35 minutes, significantly enhancing transportation between the twin cities of Mathura and Vrindavan. However, the project faced strong resistance from local residents and businesses in Mathura. Concerns were raised that the railway line would physically divide the city, leading to disruptions in daily life and commercial activities.

Given the high cost of constructing an elevated railway line—a solution proposed by the public—the project was ultimately stalled. Consequently, train operations between Mathura and Vrindavan ceased, and the existing rail infrastructure was dismantled two years ago. Since then, the land has remained vulnerable to encroachments, prompting urgent discussions on alternative uses for the space.

Understanding the immediate need for improved connectivity, MP Hema Malini advocated for the construction of a road on the vacated railway land. After discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the proposal received formal approval. The Uttar Pradesh government will now oversee the development of a 12-kilometer-long road along the former railway route, providing a direct and efficient link between Mathura and Vrindavan.

The move is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, which has long plagued the pilgrimage route, particularly during peak seasons when devotees from across the country visit the twin cities. With this road in place, both residents and visitors will experience smoother travel, boosting local commerce and tourism.

While the immediate focus remains on road construction, long-term plans include the development of an elevated railway track above the new road. This elevated corridor could accommodate a metro system, aligning with the broader vision of modernizing transportation infrastructure in the region. However, given the complexities and costs associated with such an undertaking, the metro project will only be revisited at a later stage.

To expedite the process, MP Hema Malini has announced her plans to meet with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This meeting will aim to secure swift administrative approvals and ensure that construction begins without unnecessary delays. The railway ministry is expected to complete the transfer of land to the state government soon, following which road development work will commence.

The transformation of this railway land into a functional road—and eventually an elevated metro—marks a pivotal step in enhancing Mathura-Vrindavan’s infrastructure. Not only will it preserve the sanctity of the region by preventing urban fragmentation, but it will also provide a much-needed boost to connectivity, ensuring that both pilgrims and residents benefit from a seamless transport network.
