30th July, 2026, Mathura: Vrindavan’s revered Panchkosi Parikrama Marg, one of the most sacred pilgrimage routes in Braj, is poised for a significant facelift under a comprehensive infrastructure development plan approved by the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA).
The project aims to enhance the experience of lakhs of devotees while preserving the spiritual character of the Parikrama route. Dedicated pathways will be created to separate pedestrians from motor vehicles and e-rickshaws, improving both safety and convenience for pilgrims.
According to MVDA Vice-Chairperson Lakshmi Nagappan, the Parikrama Marg is far more than a road. It is a sacred path traversed daily by thousands of devotees who circumambulate the holy town after offering prayers to Shri Banke Bihari Ji. At present, the movement of pedestrians, e-rickshaws, and other vehicles along the same route often results in congestion and raises the risk of accidents. The proposed improvements are intended to provide pilgrims with a safer, more organized, and spiritually fulfilling journey.
Phase I: Modernizing the Sacred Route
The first phase of the project will focus on the 3.3-kilometre stretch from Raman Reti to Nidhivan, with an estimated investment of ₹20 crore.
The works will include:
Separate pathways for vehicles and pilgrims.
Development of dedicated footpaths and public convenience zones.
Construction of RCC-covered drainage.
Underground relocation of electricity, communication, and other utility services to improve both aesthetics and reliability.
Phase II: Atalla Chungi Flyover
To ease one of Vrindavan’s busiest traffic bottlenecks, MVDA has approved the construction of an 800-metre-long flyover at Atalla Chungi intersection at an estimated cost of ₹80 crore.
The junction frequently experiences heavy traffic, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons. The flyover is expected to streamline vehicular movement while allowing devotees to complete the Parikrama without interruptions caused by traffic congestion.
