Vrindavan Today | Bureau Report

9th May, 2026, Mathura / Lucknow: Devotees and tourists visiting Mathura and Vrindavan, the holy land associated with the divine pastimes of Shri Krishna, are set to receive improved facilities alongside a more enriching spiritual experience. The historic Akroor Ghat, connected with Krishna’s Dwapar Yuga pastimes, is now poised to emerge as a major center of religious tourism and cultural heritage.
The government of Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a ₹6.35 crore project for the construction and beautification of Akroor Ghat, located on the right bank of the Yamuna River in Vrindavan. An initial amount of ₹3.17 crore has already been released for the project.
According to Jaiveer Singh, providing a better pilgrimage and tourism experience for devotees and visitors arriving from India and abroad remains a priority for the state government. He stated that Akroor Ghat holds immense mythological significance and is associated with the divine pastimes of Shri Krishna and Balaram. Every year, a grand fair is organized here on Kartik Purnima, attracting large numbers of devotees.
The minister further noted that Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in domestic tourism due to the increasing popularity of religious tourism, improved connectivity and expansion of visitor facilities. As a result, Mathura reportedly received more than 10.24 crore tourists and pilgrims in 2025.

Major Development Works Planned at Akroor Ghat
The project includes extensive infrastructure and beautification works aimed at strengthening the riverfront and improving facilities for pilgrims and tourists.
Under the plan, sheet piling will be carried out across a 30 meter stretch, extending 14 meters in width and 5 meters in depth. To connect and reinforce both sheet piles, 45 mm diameter anchor bars will be installed at intervals of every 3 meters.
A 5 meter wide bathing platform will also be constructed for pilgrims. New ghat steps and stone platforms will be developed and finished with red sandstone. To ensure sufficient water availability near the ghat, a 220 meter long channel will be excavated. In addition, slope pitching work will be undertaken on both the upstream and downstream sides in order to strengthen the structure and maintain long term safety and stability.
Special attention will also be given to visitor convenience and accessibility as part of the overall development plan.

Situated along the Mathura Vrindavan route on the banks of the Yamuna, Akroor Ghat occupies a revered place in Braj’s spiritual landscape and is associated with several important episodes in Vaishnava tradition.
According to traditional accounts, when Akrura was taking Lord Krishna and Balram to Mathura on the invitation of Kansa, he stopped at this very spot during the journey. While bathing in the Yamuna, Akrura witnessed the divine four armed form of Lord Vishnu within the waters and realized the supreme identity of Krishna and Balaram.
This mystical vision convinced him that Krishna was not an ordinary child, but the incarnation of Narayan Himself. Because of this sacred episode, Akroor Ghat continues to remain a place of deep faith, spiritual reverence and divine mystery for devotees visiting Braj.
Akroor Ghat also holds significance in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. It is believed that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed at Akroor Ghat during His visit to Vrindavan in the 16th century. His presence further sanctified the site, making it an important destination for devotees following the tradition of bhakti established by Him.

Mathura Junction serves as the primary arrival point for travelers coming from different districts and states, with most major trains halting there. The bus stand is located close to the railway station, making onward travel convenient for visitors.
Akroor Ghat is situated approximately 16 kilometers from Mathura Railway Station and around 15 kilometers from the new bus stand, ensuring easy accessibility for pilgrims and tourists.
Braj Festivals Continue to Draw Massive Crowds
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh stated that under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, continuous efforts are being made to develop Mathura and Vrindavan as major centers of religious and cultural tourism.
He added that grand Braj festivals including Holi, Rangotsav, Krishna Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami attract enormous gatherings of devotees and tourists from across India and abroad every year.
During the main celebrations of Rangotsav 2026 alone, more than 4.4 million devotees and tourists reportedly visited Braj, reflecting the region’s growing global popularity and spiritual attraction.
The development of Akroor Ghat is expected to provide a new dimension to tourism infrastructure in Braj while enriching the devotional and cultural experience of Krishna devotees visiting the sacred Yamuna riverfront.
