14th April, 2026, Barsana: The Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad has initiated plans to develop the ancient and spiritually significant Sakhi Giri Hill near Barsana. In a significant step toward preserving and enhancing the sacred heritage of Braj, the project focuses on eco-restoration of approximately 30 hectares of forest land, with a fencing initiative estimated at ₹1.23 crore. Out of this, ₹92 lakh has already been sanctioned.
The initiative comes amid a steady rise in the number of pilgrims visiting the Braj region, especially Barsana, the divine abode of Shri Radha Rani. Following the growing popularity of the Barsana ropeway and increased footfall in Mathura, Vrindavan, and Govardhan, authorities are focusing on sustainable development of surrounding heritage sites.
The fencing work will be carried out by the Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority and will include measures such as plantation drives and water harvesting systems to restore the ecological balance of the hill area.
Spiritual and Historical Significance
Sakhi Giri Hill, located in nearby Unchagaon, holds immense significance in the divine pastimes of Shri Krishna and Radha. According to traditional beliefs dating back to the Dwapar Yuga, Shri Krishna performed a symbolic marriage ceremony here with Lalita Sakhi and other companions of Radha.
The hill is home to several sacred landmarks:
Fisalni Shila, where Radha and Krishna are believed to have playfully slid together.
Chappan Katora, a unique formation of 56 small bowls, symbolizing the divine feasts shared by the divine couple. Chitra-Vichitra Shila, a mysterious rock formation whose patterns are said to change under sunlight even today.

Development Outlook The eco-restoration plan aims not only to protect the natural environment but also to preserve the spiritual aura of the place. The fencing will help safeguard the forest area from encroachment and degradation, ensuring a serene and safe environment for pilgrims and visitors.
According to officials, the tender process for the fencing work will begin shortly, marking the start of a comprehensive effort to blend ecological conservation with spiritual tourism in Braj.
This initiative reflects a broader vision to rejuvenate and protect the sacred geography of Braj, making it both environmentally sustainable and spiritually enriching for future generations.
