15th October, 2026, Mathura: A Shilpgram showcasing Braj’s traditional handicrafts, folk art and cultural heritage is being developed near Jachonda village on Govardhan Road at an estimated cost of ₹18.35 crore. Spread across approximately five hectares, the complex is expected to be completed by April 2027.
The project is being jointly undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department and the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad. It will include 50 shops for artisans and handicraft workers, providing space to display and sell traditional products from the Braj region.
The complex will also house a Tourist Facilitation Centre (TFC) to provide tourism-related information and visitor amenities. Accommodation facilities for tourists are planned at the centre, while a dedicated fairground will host fairs and other events.
The Shilpgram aims to bring traditional crafts and cottage industries under one roof, offering local artisans and entrepreneurs a platform to reach wider markets. It is also intended to support the preservation and promotion of Braj’s distinctive artistic traditions.
Govardhan, which attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists, is expected to gain an additional cultural tourism destination through the project.
Ashish Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority, said the Shilpgram would create employment opportunities for local artisans and artists while allowing visitors to Govardhan to experience Braj’s traditional culture.
The project is scheduled for completion in April 2027.
