Environment experts and the MoEF have prescribed 33 per cent area under green cover for districts that fall in the Taj-Trapezium Zone (TTZ). The forest cover in Mathura is only 1.71 per cent, 31 per cent less than the prescribed limit.

Vrindavan, 2022-05-18 (Vrindavan Today News): The forest department has set a target for plantation of 42.74 lakh trees in the district this year. All trees will be planted on the same day by the forest (7 lakh ) and various other departments (35 lakh) in  a concerted manner. Their growth will be tracked using geo tagging.

For the last several years, massive tree plantation drives have been undertaken in the district, with the target for each successive year being higher than the last. The efforts have translated into a 91 sq km increase in forest cover in 2021, according to a survey conducted every three years by an Uttarakhand-based organisation. A substantial increase in this number is expected in the next survey.

In 2019, the forest cover in the district decreased by 3.52 sq km compared to 2017. While the area under high and medium density forests as well as scrubs remained unchanged, open forest and others decreased by 2.96  and 0.56 sq km, respectively.
