Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Shri Krishna and the last ruler of Dwaraka, survived the Yadava clan’s internecine conflict. When Dwaraka submerged into the sea, Arjuna rescued Vajranabh and the remaining women of the Yadava clan, by bringing them to Hastinapura.

It was here that Vajranabh was declared the ruler of Mathura. King Parikshit and the sage Shandilya supported him to establish his kingdom in the Braj region.

Vajranabh built numerous temples dedicated to his great grandfather Bhagvan Shri Krishna in Braj.  However, the foreign invaders repeatedly vandalized those temples over centuries, and they were restored by the devotees in time to time. Shri Govinda Dev, Shrinath ji, Haridev etc the deity of the different forms of Shri Krishna was founded by Vajranah.

The Samadhi of Vajranabh is located in the Kamai Karhala village near Barsana in Chhata Subdivision of Mathura district.

Remarkably, while government records indicate ownership of approximately 2.5 acres of land for Vajranabh’s Samadhi, only one acre land was found free from encroachments and illegal occupation, on the site measurements. The Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad (UPBTVP), the department responsible for the conservation and development of the religious sites in Braj, plans to clear these encroachments before commencing the development work.  The project would cost ₹3 crore that will encompasses the entire 2.5-acre area.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized the need to preserve and develop not only well-known heritage sites but also those that have fallen into obscurity. The removal of encroachments and illegal occupation from Vajranabh’s Samadhi site will be the first step towards realizing this vision.

According to Nagendra Pratap, CEO of the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad, once the land is cleared, development work will commence. The Samadhi of Vajranabh will be transformed into a major tourist attraction, showcasing Lord Krishna’s lineage and providing visitor facilities to ensure a comfortable and enriching experience.

Uttar Pradesh Government’s commitment in restoring Vajranabh’s Samadhi exemplifies its dedication to preserving the rich cultural heritage associated with Lord Krishna. The government’s allocation of funds and emphasis on clearing encroachments underscore its determination to revive forgotten historical sites and make them accessible to both pilgrims and tourists alike.
